Another step towards normalization between Azerbaijan and Armenia

2024-04-29 17:20

The AIR Center’s Head of Department, Javid Valiyev's article entitled “Another step towards normalization between Azerbaijan and Armenia," has been published by "Yeni Şafak."

J. Valiyev touched on the important events taking place in the normalization process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

"Starting from April 17, Russian peacekeeping forces began to withdraw from Karabakh. Then, at the 8th meeting of the commissions on delimitation on April 19, an agreement was reached on handing over 4 villages occupied by Armenia to Azerbaijan by May 15."

J. Valiyev highlighted the key processes that happened in the region after the end of the Second Karabakh War. According to him, the region has witnessed positive outcomes of the talks between the parties, which in turn turned upside down the French theses claiming possible assault from the Azerbaijani side against Armenia.

"In conclusion, this decision was reached as a result of direct contacts between the two countries and should be considered an important step towards peace. This demonstrates that the two countries can reach an agreement on certain issues without the intervention of third parties. This also increases the possibility of signing a peace agreement between the two countries without a mediator and raises hopes for mutual cooperation for the future of the region."
